The project proposed in this document is framed within the research group of
technological use of materials and energy, GIATME, of the ECCI University and is part
of a macro project approved within an internal call of the university, which seeks to have
another thermal machine connected to the ECCI-1 thermal plant, in which the input
conditions can be varied and the behavior of the process occurring inside the
equipment can be determined.
The general objective of the project is to design a motor that functions by
volumetric expansion and to evaluate the feasibility for the manufacture, operation and
location of the same so that it works efficiently under the output parameters of the ECCI1 boiler of the thermal machines laboratory of the headquarters. J of the University, for
which it is carried out:
In the first place, an evaluation of each of the existing types of rotary engines is
carried out, which are capable of being modified to convert them from rotary combustion
engines to rotary engines with volumetric expansion. A Pugh matrix is applied to
determine the type of engine to be designed.
On the other hand, the characterization of the steam quality from the outlet of the
boiler to before the turbine of the plant aids to locate the best motor position, through
the application of a Design Of Experiments (DOE) technique.
It should be noted that the mathematical modeling of the motor is developed from
the selected typology, therefore, the equations that govern and describe the entire
process that occur inside the motor during its operation are stated. This is used to
create a computational tool in MATLAB®, by solving these equations through different
iterations of the programmed software.
By means of the SOLID WORKS application, a prototype is modeled in CAD from
the data generated in the computational tool, and thus the proposed prototype and it’s
the planes of the model are developed.

Finally, a technical-economic feasibility study is carried out to determine if the
designed motor can be manufactured, evaluating whether it can be manufactured with
the machines that the University has and the approximate cost for its manufacture.
